Hey, can coach and I talk with you for a second?
Why are you a captain?
Is it because you’re popular? Are you the best athlete? Are you the most skilled? Are you the best player on the team?
You’re not any of those things.
You’re a captain because we believe in you. The team believes in you. You’re a captain because you showed leadership, strength and kindness.
Do you remember the first day of practice? We do. You were the first one dressed. You helped to bring the goal out. You asked where the ball bucket was. You grabbed a freshman to pass with before we started stretching.
Do you know why we don’t think you should be a captain anymore?
You don’t do any of those things now.
To be fair, no one really does those things anymore. We can’t even get them to do ball hunt after practice. The other captains have been slacking. We see it every day.
But you’re also letting them do that. Yes, you’re all Captains - but you’re the one we depend on. You’re the engine; you’re the heart - and you’re doing everything a little slower. To certain point, we really do understand.
Losing games can take a lot out of you. A bad break up in high school is hard - having any sort of relationship right now is difficult. (Trust us, we know.) The pressure to succeed in school is always tough to deal with.
We understand that.
It’s not our job to make you a better lacrosse player. It’s our job to make you a better person. That’s why we are having this talk right now. It could be too much for you.
To us, being a captain is an honor. When you were named as one…we saw you smile. It made us smile, too. We thought it meant a lot to you. But your actions have told - shown - us otherwise.
This isn’t a come to Jesus meeting. This is a reality check. We need more from you. We might need more than you are prepared to give. And that’s okay.
But you have to tell us now - are you in?
Or are you out?
Tough conversation but tremendous life lesson for a young player on receiving end. Will help them as they move forward with their life... Sports teach so many life lessons that will stay with these kids and good for you for having that conversation. Their reaction will be very telling about how they handle their life moving forward.
